Water’s Getting Deep

2003 (6th Grade)

Don’t tell me
I already know what you are thinking
You’re going to say it
The words
The hurtful ones
The ones I never want to hear

[Chorus:]
But I don’t want the water getting deep
I’m gasping between each word that you say
I need air, need to breathe
Need space, gotta leave

The water’s getting deep
Might as well leave
Need to breathe
On this little place I call Earth

[Chorus:]
But I don’t want the water getting deep
I’m gasping between each word that you say
I need air, need to breathe
Need space, gotta leave

Who do you think you are
Barging into my life
Then you’re gonna leave me miserable
Who do you think you are
You’re making the water deep
Might as well lay here forever, forever
Cause the water’s gotten deep

[Chorus 2:]
And I didn’t want the water getting deep
I was gasping between each word that you said
I needed air, needed to breathe
Needed space, so I left

‘Round The Corner

2003 (6th Grade)

Hey you, what’s going on
What’s going on, what’s going on
Don’t you know my plans
Fo-o-or to-da-a-ay

I plan to walk around
Walk around, walk around
Every single corner that I ca-a-an
In o-one day

Then I will walk back home
Walk back home, walk back home
I will see you
And then I will sa-a-ay

[Chorus:]
Hey you, what’s going on
I’m heading around the corner
Why don’t you walk with me
Around the corner
The only place that I’m heading now
Is around the corner
Want to come to-o-o-o-o

And I said

[Echo:]
Round the corner
And round the corner
And round the corner
Then right back home

[Echo:]
Round the corner
And round the corner
And round the corner
Then right back home

Is all that I’m doing

[Chorus:]
Hey you, what’s going on
I’m heading around the corner
Why don’t you walk with me
Around the corner
The only place that I’m heading to
Is around the corner
Want to come to-o-o-o-o

Best Friends Forever

2003 (5th Grade)

We are best friends forever
Even though sometimes you make me glad
And sometimes you make me really sad
I know you didn’t mean what you said
But you weren’t thinking ahead
To what would happen to me
Can’t you see?
You made me really sad
Will I ever be glad?
I look around
I hear the sound
“I’m sorry,
Best friends forever?”

Note: This month I’m dedicating to sharing many of my earliest poems and songs from elementary and middle school, which I previously overlooked. Despite not being my best work, they laid the foundation for the writer I’ve become. It’s important for me to acknowledge this part of my history and its role in shaping my journey as a writer.
